I've been thinking about this lately, and figured I would share. So, recently, I have been trying to put more work into my instagram. I've never been a huge fane of social media, but its good business and offers me a way (for now at least) to connect with fans in a more intimate fashion. So, I have of course been following lots of authors on Instagram, learning from their content and making friends where I can.
But an interesting phenomina has stuck out to me. Many (if not most) of the self-published authors on Instagram are both women and romance/spicy romance authors.
Now, I love a good romance as much as anyone, but when I say romance it generallly ranges from like three sex scenes to crazy fae vampires who bind their lovers and whisper in their ears.
So I guess my question is, how is this not porn? And if it is? Why is no one talking about that? There is a much larger conversation about the danger/damage of porn to be had, but as far as it pertains to this, the comeback seems to be "sex is a part fo real life, these people are just writing their experiences."
Now, that seems pretty valid to me, but at what point is it not about the human experience and more about the sexual teasing and/or satisfaction of the reader?
If you watch a porn video with a really good plot is it still porn? I would say yes. Why? Because the purpose is still sexual gratification, no matter how much fluff we put on it.
So if people are reading and writing books for the sexual teasing and gratification of others, how is that not porn? And why are so many people reading/writing that?
I realize this is much more serious than most of the stuff I write, but I just wanted to put it out there and get some of ya'll opinions on it. Just because something is human, does that mean it should be written about?
