During his long and illustrious life, Andrew Carnegie, the legendary American philanthropist, built 2,509 libraries. Most public, and a few academic.
His reason? He believed that libraries were a key aspect to the proper socialization of a community, culture, and society at large. And at risk of sounding obnoxiously self-important, I have to say I agree with Mr. Carnegie.
And so whether you troup to the library for free internet, to take your kids to story time, or to buy their 50 cent used books on occasion, libraries are a key aspect of society. And they serve an important purpose. They make the building block of a civilized society--knowledge, entirely free.
